The Social Work Disability Justice League

The Social Work Disability Justice League (SWDJL) is a collective working to transform social work practice, policy, and education by centering the leadership and lived experience of disabled people. Dr. Wetmur is a co-founder of SWDJL and built its website.

Social work has often treated disabled people as clients to be managed rather than as leaders and knowers. SWDJL starts from the opposite premise: Disability Justice is the foundation of the work, not a specialty area or an afterthought. The League's work is guided by the ten principles of Disability Justice articulated by Sins Invalid (2015), including leadership of those most impacted, interdependence, collective access, and collective liberation.

SWDJL hosts an annual virtual Unconference for students, educators, and practitioners; develops curriculum and teaching resources; offers tools and peer consultation for anti-ableist practice; challenges ableist policy across social service systems; and builds solidarity with the broader disability justice movement.

The 2026 Unconference, "Disability Justice in Trying Times," runs online October 13 to 16, 12 to 5 PM ET. CART captioning is provided from 12 to 4 PM ET each day; the final hour will rely on Zoom's accessibility features.​
